SAINT PETER’S BASILICA
- THE CASTEL SANT'ANGELO - NAVONA SQUARE.
Let’s begin
with the most important centre of Christianity, Saint Peter’s
square,designed by G.L. Bernini (1661).
We enter the basilica of Saint Peter where four hundred statues
are waiting for us,from the Pietà by Michelangelo realized
in the year 1498 to the last ones representing the popes of
twentyeth century. Recently, after his beatification the body
of John XXIII has been located inside a crystal tomb.
After the visit of the basilica we will go to the Castle of
the Saint Angel through the Via della Conciliazione. The Castle,
forteress of the Popes in the middle ages was in the origins,
the tomb of the Roman Emperor Adrian. (Outside).
We will cross the Tiber river near the Palace of Justice,
to get into Navona square realised on the ruins of the ancient
Domitian’s Stadium, with the famous Fountain of the
four rivers, Bernini’s masterpiece.
